Does Homeowners Insurance Cover HVAC?

Did you know your homeowners insurance may offer additional protection for your HVAC system? Many homeowners don’t realize that Equipment Breakdown Coverage may be available as an endorsement to their homeowners insurance policy.

Depending on the policy, it may help cover certain sudden mechanical or electrical breakdowns involving equipment such as compressors, motors, electrical components, heating & cooling equipment, and control boards.

You generally need this coverage in place before something happens. Call your insurance agent and ask whether your homeowners policy includes an Equipment Breakdown endorsement that covers your HVAC system, and if not, whether you can add it.

Equipment breakdown coverage is generally designed for sudden and accidental breakdowns—not normal wear and tear, deterioration, or lack of maintenance. Coverage varies by insurance company and policy.

Why Is Preventative Maintenance Needed on an HVAC System?

Your HVAC system is easy to ignore when it is working properly. The problem is that many homeowners do not notice an HVAC issue until the system stops working—often when heating or cooling is needed most. Preventative maintenance gives a technician the opportunity to identify developing problems before they become emergency service calls.

A useful comparison is your vehicle. It may run perfectly today, but you still change the oil and perform routine maintenance to help prevent future problems. Read More...

August Comfort Tip: Your HVAC System Needs to Breathe Too!

During the hottest part of summer, your HVAC system is already working hard. A dirty or clogged air filter can restrict airflow, put unnecessary strain on your equipment, and make it harder to keep your home comfortable.

Check your return-air filter, replace it if it’s dirty or clogged, make sure return-air grilles aren’t blocked, and pay attention if your system is running constantly but struggling to cool. Check your filter every 30 days during peak cooling season.
